A Nigerian college student was sentenced to death by hanging for trafficking cannabis in Kuala Lumpur.
A judge of High Court, Justice Amelia Tee Hong Geok Abdullah, handed down the decision on Wednesday after the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt in Uchechukwu Nelson Ohaechesi’s case.
According to the judge, the court found that Ohaechesi, 37, was not a witness of truth. She said the accused’s defence was an afterthought, a pure fabrication and untrue.
She said the court also considered the evidence of the accused in totality to determine if the defence raised by him has nevertheless cast a reasonable doubt as to the truth of the prosecution’s case.
"The court therefore sentences the accused to death and vide Section 183 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the accused is to be hanged by the neck until he is dead," she ordered.
Ohaechesi was accused of trafficking 26,533 grams of cannabis beside an overhead bridge staircase at Taman Connaught Highway (Kajang bound) in Cheras at about 7.45pm on Oct 17, 2010.
A total of seven prosecution witnesses were called to testify, while the defence had only one witness.

Kennis Music was and probably still is the dream label of every artiste who wants to be catapulted to super stardom. They boast of a string of successful stars like 2face,Eedris Abdulkareem and many more. Reacting to reports the label uses and dumps artists, the CEO Kenny Ogunbe told NigerianFilms
The story that artistes on Kennis Music are just being used is not true. I see it as a beer parlour talk. There is no artiste that will allow someone use him and still remain with that person.Remember that someone spent money on an artiste when he was nobody. And so, the person that has spent his hard earned money on the artist will like to get it back later.
But the unfortunate thing is that a lot of fraudsters and unscrupulous people are coming into it. They will tell you that they want to take an artiste to the next level. They end up buying him a flashy car, like a jeep, not minding the fact that he is not talented. But within two years, you find out that both of them are nowhere to be found.
“There are so many of such people in the industry and there will still be more. So, the story is a mere allegation. But if an artiste feels he’s being given peanut, he should then not sign a contract. You should rather go and look for a way to promote yourself, produce your songs, direct your video and make your life better. But I know you cannot be a boss in this industry in one day.
“Rather, you have to climb through the ladder and while you’re climbing, you still have to work harder in order to achieve what you want so that you are not paid peanuts.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Nelson Mandela’s daughter Maki has talked about her father’s suffering in the final months of his life.
Speaking to CNN’s Robyn Curnow – the only international journalist to broadcast live from Nelson Mandela’s funeral – Maki asserted that while his medical team treated him with dignity and respect, his death came as a relief after the agonising struggle his health had faced.
"There were times I was telling the doctors I think enough is enough,” she said. “As doctors they had their duty to try everything up to the last moment, but for me as a daughter it was excruciating watching that."
Maki also talked about plans for the family to open Mandela’s grave to visitors in a year or so, with plans in place for a visitors' center and memorial garden, where tourists will be able to walk around the grave and see it from a viewing point.
Ghanaian actor Van Vicker is not happy. Remember some AGN members led by Ibinabo Fiberesima travelled to Ghana in March to play a football match with their Ghanaian counterparts? Well, that match brought Van Vicker to where he is now.
Van Vicker during the match sustained a very serious injury which made him hospitalized for days and later had to leave the country for United States for better treatment, but the guild abandoned him shortly after that he said. Hear him;
’I was first admitted at Sunshine Hospital in Ghana and later transferred to United states of America where I am still receiving medical treatment, but had to come to Ghana to continue with my movie shoot, and then go back for check- up’.
‘I believe one of the responsibilities of the Guild is to support its members, or support the interest of Ghanaian actors. I am a member of GAG and that was why I went to play for the Guild and also to represent Ghana in the name of the Guild. I was told that the match was to celebrate Ghana’s Independence Day and if for nothing at all, the Guild should have shown concern,’ he lamented.
‘I think it is a sign of ingratitude, because it’s just like going to work for a friend and getting injured in the process and the friend turns deaf ears to how you are recovering’ he said.
The high cost of living in Ghana forced 817 people, mostly women, to emigrate after giving up their citizenship in 2013.
