One man who is out to open many old “secrets” in the Catholic church is Pope Francis.
Some of the beliefs that are held in the church but contrary to the loving nature of God are now being set aside by the Pope who was recently named The Man of The Year by TIME Magazine.
In his latest revelations, Pope Francis said:
“Through humility, soul searching, and prayerful contemplation we have gained a new understanding of certain dogmas. The church no longer believes in a literal hell where people suffer. This doctrine is incompatible with the infinite love of God. God is not a judge but a friend and a lover of humanity. God seeks not to condemn but only to embrace. Like the fable of Adam and Eve, we see hell as a literary device. Hell is merely a metaphor for the isolated soul, which like all souls ultimately will be united in love with God.”
In a shocking speech that is reverberating across the world, Pope Francis declared that:
“All religions are true, because they are true in the hearts of all those who believe in them. What other kind of truth is there? In the past, the church has been harsh on those it deemed morally wrong or sinful. Today, we no longer judge. Like a loving father, we never condemn our children. Our church is big enough for heterosexuals and homosexuals, for the pro-life and the pro-choice! For conservatives and liberals, even communists are welcome and have joined us. We all love and worship the same God.”
In the last six months, Catholic cardinals, bishops and theologians have been deliberating in the Vatican City, in discussing the future of the church and redefining long-held Catholic doctrines and dogmas. The Third Vatican Council, is the largest and most important since the Second Vatican Council was concluded in 1962.
Pope Francis convened the new council to “finally finish the work of the Second Vatican Council.”
The Third Vatican Council concluded with Pope Francis announcing that…
Catholicism is now a “modern and reasonable religion, which has undergone evolutionary changes. The time has come to abandon all intolerance. We must recognize that religious truth evolves and changes. Truth is not absolute or set in stone. Even atheists acknowledge the divine. Through acts of love and charity the atheist acknowledges God as well, and redeems his own soul, becoming an active participant in the redemption of humanity.”
One statement in the Pope’s speech has sent traditionalists into a fit of confusion and hysteria…
“God is changing and evolving as we are, For God lives in us and in our hearts. When we spread love and kindness in the world, we touch our own divinity and recognize it. The Bible is a beautiful holy book, but like all great and ancient works, some passages are outdated. Some even call for intolerance or judgement. The time has come to see these verses as later interpolations, contrary to the message of love and truth, which otherwise radiates through scripture. In accordance with our new understanding, we will begin to ordain women as cardinals, bishops and priests. In the future, it is my hope that we will have a woman pope one day. Let no door be closed to women that is open to men!”
A few cardinals in the Catholic church are against Pope Francis’ latest declarations. Watch out for the report.
(Reuters) - When President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty this week annexing Crimea to great fanfare in the Kremlin and anger in the West, a trusted lieutenant was making his way to Asia to shore up ties with Russia's eastern allies.
Forcing home the symbolism of his trip, Igor Sechin gathered media in Tokyo the next day to warn Western governments that more sanctions over Moscow's seizure of the Black Sea peninsula from Ukraine would be counter-productive.
The underlying message from the head of Russia's biggest oil company, Rosneft, was clear: If Europe and the United States isolate Russia, Moscow will look East for new business, energy deals, military contracts and political alliances.
The Holy Grail for Moscow is a natural gas supply deal with China that is apparently now close after years of negotiations. If it can be signed when Putin visits China in May, he will be able to hold it up to show that global power has shifted eastwards and he does not need the West.
"The worse Russia's relations are with the West, the closer Russia will want to be to China. If China supports you, no one can say you're isolated," said Vasily Kashin, a China expert at the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST) think thank.
Some of the signs are encouraging for Putin. Last Saturday China abstained in a U.N. Security Council vote on a draft resolution declaring invalid the referendum in which Crimea went on to back union with Russia.
Although China is nervous about referendums in restive regions of other countries which might serve as a precedent for Tibet and Taiwan, it has refused to criticize Moscow.
The support of Beijing is vital for Putin. Not only is China a fellow permanent member of the U.N. Security Council with whom Russia thinks alike, it is also the world's second biggest economy and it opposes the spread of Western-style democracy.
Little wonder, then, that Putin thanked China for its understanding over Ukraine in a Kremlin speech on Tuesday before signing the treaty claiming back Crimea, 60 years after it was handed to Ukraine by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.
Chinese President Xi Jinping showed how much he values ties with Moscow, and Putin in particular, by making Russia his first foreign visit as China's leader last year and attending the opening of the Winter Olympics in Sochi last month.
Many Western leaders did not go to the Games after criticism of Russia's record on human rights. By contrast, when Putin and Xi discussed Ukraine by telephone on March 4, the Kremlin said their positions were "close".
A strong alliance would suit both countries as a counterbalance to the United States.
WARM EMBRACE, BUT NO BEAR HUG
But despite the positive signs from Beijing, Putin may find China's embrace is not quite the bear hug he would like.
There is still some wariness between Beijing and Moscow, who almost went to war over a border dispute in the 1960s, when Russia was part of the Communist Soviet Union.
State-owned Russian gas firm Gazprom hopes to pump 38 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas per year to China from 2018 via the first pipeline between the world's largest producer of conventional gas to the largest consumer.
"May is in our plans," a Gazprom spokesman said, when asked about the timing of an agreement.
A company source said: "It would be logical to expect the deal during Putin's visit to China."
But the two sides are still wrangling over pricing and Russia's cooling relations with the West could make China toughen its stance. Russian industry sources say Beijing targets a lower price than Europe, where Gazprom generates around half of its revenues, pays.
Upheaval at China National Petroleum Corp, at the centre of a corruption investigation, could cause also delays, and Valery Nesterov, an analyst with Sberbank CIB in Moscow, said China also needs time to review its energy strategy and take into account shale gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
"The bottom line is that the threat of sanctions on energy supplies from Russia has indirectly strengthened China's position in the negotiations," Nesterov said.
Russia meets almost a third of Europe's gas needs and supplies to the European Union and Turkey last year exceeded 162 bcm, a record high.
However, China overtook Germany as Russia's biggest buyer of crude oil this year thanks to Rosneft securing deals to boost eastward oil supplies via the East Siberia-Pacific Ocean pipeline and another crossing Kazakhstan.
If Russia is isolated by a new round of Western sanctions - those so far affect only a few officials' assets abroad and have not been aimed at companies - Russia and China could also step up cooperation in areas apart from energy.
CAST's Kashin said the prospects of Russia delivering Sukhoi SU-35 fighter jets to China, which has been under discussion since 2010, would grow.
China is very interested in investing in infrastructure, energy and commodities in Russia, and a decline in business with the West could force Moscow to drop some of its reservations about Chinese investment in strategic industries.
"With Western sanctions, the atmosphere could change quickly in favor of China," said Brian Zimbler Managing Partner of Morgan Lewis international law firm's Moscow office.
Russia-China trade turnover grew by 8.2 percent in 2013 to $8.1 billion but Russia was still only China's seventh largest export partner in 2013, and was not in the top 10 countries for imported goods. The EU is Russia's biggest trade partner, accounting for almost half of all its trade turnover.
DILEMMA FOR JAPAN, SUPPORT IN INDIA
Sechin, whose visit also included India, Vietnam and South Korea, is a close Putin ally who worked with him in the St Petersburg city authorities and then the Kremlin administration, before serving as a deputy prime minister.
In Tokyo, he offered Japanese investors more cooperation in the development of Russian oil and gas.
Rosneft already has some joint projects with companies from Japan, the world's largest consumer of LNG, and Tokyo has been working hard under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to improve ties with Moscow, despite a territorial dispute dating from World War Two.
But Japan faces a dilemma over Crimea because it is under pressure to impose sanctions on Moscow as a member of the Group of Seven advanced economies.
It does not recognize the referendum on Crimea's union with Russia and has threatened to suspend talks on an investment pact and relaxation of visa requirements as part of sanctions.
Closer ties are being driven by mutual energy interests. Russia plans to at least double oil and gas flows to Asia in the next 20 years and Japan imports huge volumes of fossil fuel to replace lost energy from its nuclear power industry, shut down after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
Oil imports from Russia rose almost 45 percent in 2013 and accounted for about 7 percent of supplies.
But if the dilemma is a tough one for Japan, it is unlikely to cause Putin much lost sleep.
"I don't think Putin is worried much by about what is said in Japan or even in Europe. He worries only about China," said Alexei Vlasov, head of the Information and Analytical Center on Social and Political Processes in the Post-Soviet Space.
Putin did take time, however, to thank one other country apart from China for its understanding over Ukraine and Crimea - saying India had shown "restraint and objectivity".
He also called Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the crisis on Tuesday, suggesting there is room for Russia's ties with traditionally non-aligned India to flourish.
Although India has become the largest export market for U.S. arms, Russia remains a key defense supplier and relations are friendly, even if lacking a strong business and trade dimension, due to a strategic partnership dating to the Soviet era.
Putin's moves to assert Russian control over Crimea were seen very favorably in the Indian establishment, N. Ram, publisher of The Hindu newspaper, told Reuters. "Russia has legitimate interests," he added.
For Putin, the Crimea crisis offers a test case for ideas he set out in his foreign policy strategy published two years ago as he sought a six-year third term as president.
He said at the time he wanted stronger business ties with China to "catch the Chinese wind in the sails of our economy". But he also said Russia must be "part of the greater world" and added: "We do not wish to and cannot isolate ourselves."
Two years on, he is closer to securing the first goal, but it is not yet clear how his population feels he has done on the second.
Only 11 of the 24 members - plus FIFA president Sepp Blatter - who took part in the vote in December 2010 are still on the committee, with the others having either retired or in some cases been banned or resigned while under investigation.
Last September, Garcia said his probe into the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups would see investigators interview representatives of every bid team - interviews have already taken place with a number of officials who worked on England's unsuccessful 2018 bid.
Sources connected to the world governing body say Garcia is now expected to interview those 12 executive committee members who are still in office.
It is expected the interviews will focus on the bidding process and look into any allegations of wrongdoing and breach of bidding rules including collusion between bids.
It comes after a report that the FBI is investigating payments from a company owned by Qatari Mohamed Bin Hammam to fellow former FIFA member Jack Warner and his family. Both men left FIFA in disgrace following a 2011 corruption scandal.
Meanwhile, the former head of Australia's unsuccessful bid for the 2022 tournament said he hoped the investigation would come up with "the right answers".
Frank Lowy said he still hoped FIFA would refund the £25million public money spent on the Australian bid if FIFA moves the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to the winter.
Lowy told Australian media: "It is generally known ... that the process was not exactly a good one, to say the least.
"I've read the papers and while I would not use the word 'corruption', I think the process wasn't quite clear to everybody and the jury is still out.
"It was not a level playing field and I said at the time that we had not heard the last word about the process.
"I still don't think it is going to go away. These stories are coming up from time to time and until FIFA makes the final decision it will regurgitate each time."
In terms of a winter World Cup, Lowy added: "I feel if FIFA changes the date, then I think they hope to refund the people that bid on a certain time (in the summer). Whether we get the money back or not is hard to say, but I certainly put the claim in."
Qatar's 2022 World Cup organising committee said its bid committee strictly adhered to FIFA's bidding regulations.
The Ivorian left Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2012 having won the club’s first Champions League trophy and his former manager believes he will come back in the future.
Jose Mourinho believes Didier Drogba will return to Chelsea one day.
The Ivorian’s feats have established him as one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players, and Mourinho thinks he will return to the club in some capacity in the future.
When asked whether he could see Drogba coming back, the Portuguese told reporters: “That’s not for me [to decide]. That’s for Chelsea [to decide]. I think it has to happen one day.
“When? I don’t know. As a player, as a coach, as an ambassador? Next year, in four to five years, in 10 years? I don’t know. But when a person represents so much to a club and when a club represents so much to a person I think he has to be welcomed back.
“Undoubtedly he’s one of the most important players of the history of this club. That’s not a doubt.
“All Chelsea supporters agree with that. We don’t say the most important one because that’s not fair for other people that was in the same level and in the same generation.
“Is he the same player at 36 than he was at 26? I think nobody is but he is one of the best strikers in the world. That’s for sure.”
Voluptuous actress, Sarraphina Onyekachi Amaechi, a public administration graduate, has come a long way in the movie industry. The ebony beauty is respected and appreciated for her talent. Her rise to prominence did not come as a result of her using her "oranges" to dazzle men in the movie industry, according to her, she took the stairs, savouring every bit of pain and gain along the way.
But her oranges continue to put her in the searchlight of men, everywhere she goes. In fact. Serraphina said her boobs are becoming rebellious. Sharing an experience where the "big oranges" cause a stir, she said:
“The breasts are becoming more and more aggressive by the day. One fateful day I was traveling, just at the airport, as I just bent down to open my bag, my breasts fell out like bombs. I was so embarrassed but then that is part of me and I am proud of it.”
On taking up a nudé role in a Nollywood movie, Serraphina said...
"It’s not about the money but more about telling the story as it were. I can act in a porn movie but I can never go nudé myself. If I have to act with somebody, they use a body double to do the acting, that’s fine.
But as for me, I can never go nudé. If you insist that I must act nudé, then you have to use a body double.”
Respected radical pastor, Tunde Bakare, has revealed that he will donate his own share of the allowances and stipends from the conference to charity. Bakare said he does not need the money, insisting that he is not in the FCT, Abuja, to make money but to render services for the good of Nigeria.
"I do not need the money they are paying. I am here to render my service to the country. If it becomes very important [for me to collect it], I will give the money to charity.
"No retreat, no surrender. I am not going to walk out, no matter what. I am going to stay here and fix the problems. In war it is no retreat, no surrender!"
A couple, who were among the injured during last weekend’s Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS) recruitment tragedy, are crying out for help. Mrs Grace Omuagbo and her husband Mr. Timothy Omuagbon, are among the Nigerians who tried to get a job with the Immigration Service during the scam exercise but she is now in the hospital being treated at the emergency ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
Grace, an Economics graduate of the Delta State University, suffered a broken rib and scapula during the stampede at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
A can was provided to help her drain out blood from her broken rib and she was put on oxygen. "I had broken ribs and a bone in my shoulder. An iron has been fixed in my rib to enable the blood to flow. Doctors said my lungs collapsed"...
Grace said she and her husband received text messages to be at the stadium for the test but were surprised to meet a huge crowd.
“As we were going in, people were struggling to get in, but the door was not wide enough. I fell and was revived. Immigration officials took us to the Central hospital. I could not talk and I was coughing out blood,” she said, adding:
“My husband took me to private hospital from where I was referred here. We were many that Immigration officers took to the hospital. One person died.
“My husband paid the hospital bill. I teach in a private school and earn a little salary. They should help us and give one of us a job. My husband finished from Auchi Polytechnic since 2006.”
The Omuagbons have three children.
Her husband Timothy studied Accountancy at Auchi Federal Polytechnic and worked at a firm before opting to drive taxi because the salary was “little” and was being delayed.
He had bruises all over his body but said he had to be strong to enable him take care of his wife.
“I am 35 years old. At the stadium, the crowd was large. Only one gate was open for the thousands of people who came for the test. We were at the front. I held my wife so that we could be together. Both of us fell and many people fell on us. You can see the bruises all over my body.
“Immigration officers helped me out. My wife was still being trampled when I had to call for help. She was already gone but they poured water on her. Immigration people brought their van and took us to the hospital. They left us there. I saw my wife’s condition and I took her away.
“I have spent over N100,000. I was doing a private job and was being paid N30,000 but the salary was not regular. It was not helping my family, which made me to leave. I was working as a taxi driver before we heard of this recruitment. They should not allow us to die before giving us jobs. They should come to our aid. My wife is lying here at the hospital and there’s nobody to help,” he said.
The minister and the Immigration authority have not said anything about the plight of this suffering couple.
Nigeria is a crazy zone: We have crude oil but we can't refine petroleum products for our local consumption, in the last 15 years. In 1961, Nigeria was responsible for 42 percent of groundnut export in the world, but today our country Nigeria is not exporting even 5 percent groundnut. In 1999, when Obasanjo came to power, we had just 1,900 megawatts, when he was leaving in 2007, he increased it to over 4,000 megawatts, but today, six year after, Nigeria is still battling with the same 4,000 megawatts.
We have close to 400,000 policemen in Nigeria today but the level of insecurity is more dangerous than it was in 2000 when Obasanjo first gave approval for mass recruitment into the police. But, how can there ever be adequate security when policemen are washing cars for big men and carrying bags for their wives?
...this is certainly not police duties but house boy and house girl work!
Tyler Perry is one man who's learned to live a positive life no matter what comes his way and he's succeeding on this path. The guy almost killed himself as a teenager while he was growing up, due to the way and manner his father used to beat him like a "slave". But Tyler didn't even know that the man was just his mother's husband and not necessarily his real father.
His mother is late now and she never told him the truth before departing this world. But 44years old Tyler took a DNA test with his brother recently and the result shows that they are not brothers and that man who almost killed him with serious beatings is obviously not his true father.
Tyler is heart-broken over the discovery. Below is how he addressed the issue:
"I love my mother to death, but she lied to me. Some of you have secrets that your kids need to know. Let the chips fall where they may. For the peace of that person, let them know."
Of course, he is angry, but he still used his story to teach other women how to relate with their children. While addressing an audience at the Women's Empowerment 2014 event in North Carolina, Tyler said he had always believed that Emmitt Perry, the violent man he grew up with, was his father. But he is not.
Now he's looking for his real father. I just wonder what stopped his mother from telling him the truth. So sad!
MTN Ambassadors are generating excitement among the youth, especially the followers of the entertainment industry, as the likes of Wizkid, Davido, Iyanya, Kcee, Don Jazzy, Praiz, Tiwa Savage, Chidinma, iMike and Harrysong go in search of their look-alikes. Supported by the largest ICT company in Africa, the initiative will give the over 70,000,000 youth population an opportunity to share the spotlight with some of the finest musical superstars in the country. In addition, a VIP treat and invitations to exclusive youth parties, with the celebrities in attendance, are already in place for the look-alikes and fans.
Speaking with one of the artistes, Iyanya Mbuk, he said “the objective of this youth-centric, entertaining initiative is to connect the teeming youth population, who cherish stardom and have been supportive, with their favourite artistes as well as help fans in general bond with the music industry in Nigeria”.
The “Kukere” master further mentioned that the selection, which has already begun, is taking place on MTN Twitter handle, Facebook page and Instagram account because the company has the largest subscriber base and technology that will make the process smoother and effective.
He therefore urged interested youths to be part of this laudable project by tagging their pictures with their look-alike artiste names and follow each entry with hashtag #MTNCelebdouble. More so, the Project Fame winner mentioned that the procedure includes subscription for any of the artistes Callertunez.
In a bid to generate more excitement, the artistes have decided that the top two most look-alikes, for each of the artistes, will be selected for an all-expenses paid VIP day with the full perks of being a star at an exclusive location before a once-in-a-lifetime party at three clubs spread across the western and eastern regions of Nigeria. Information gathered further reveals that the parties which will take place on the same day will have an even spread of the superstars and their look-alikes.
In a separate interview, another artiste, Don Jazzy reiterated that the initiative is one of several ways he and the other superstars plan to reward the teeming Nigerian youth for their passion and consistency in supporting the indigenous music industry.

The Microsoft founder says most of his $76bn fortune will go to charity.
He is the world's richest man, with a personal fortune of $76 billion, but Bill Gates will not be leaving it all to his three children.
In a rare insight into his personal life, the Microsoft founder and his wife, Melinda, have opened up about how they are raising their family.
The couple, speaking at a TED conference in Vancouver, said their children will be encouraged to make their own way in the world without the help of billion-dollar trust funds.
Gates said that instead of money, they had given their two daughters and son a good education so they can learn how to rely on their own abilities rather than their parents' fortune.
'You've easily got enough money despite your vast contributions to the foundation to make them all billionaires,' conference organizer Chris Anderson said.
Gates responded by saying: 'They won’t have anything like that. They need to have a sense that their own work is meaningful and important.'
You've got to make sure they have a sense of their own ability and what they’re going to go and do,' he added.
We want to strike a balance so they have the freedom to do anything but not sort of a lot of money showered on them so that they can go out and do nothing,' Gates said.
He added that they have told their children most of the fortune would be left to their charity, which tackles poor health and poverty.
Melinda Gates also used the TED talks to give details about a trip to Tanzania she made with her eldest daughter Jen.
The mother and daughter stayed with a family in a rural area, which helped them better understand the barriers to education faced by girls in the country.
During her description of the trip, Melinda Gates showed slides of their time in Tanzania, as well as pictures of her children.
The couple rarely discuss their private life, but she said the children had agreed to their pictures being shown to show their support for the charity.
They added that their parenting style was inspired by philanthropist Warren Buffett, who has taken a similar approach with his children.
Like Buffett, the Gates have joined the Giving Pledge, which is committed to diverting wealth to philanthropy. The friends agree leaving a huge sum to their children was no good for their families or society.
**They are living such an exemplary life. May God continue to bless their beautiful hearts. I hope our Naija billionaires will take a cue from them.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, on Saturday described his people of the South East as prostitutes when he described the people of the area as people of easy virtue in Nigeria, contrary to what used to be obtainable in the past when people of the region, especially the women, were cherished and honoured for their conduct and morality.
Addressing All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful at Orlu Township Stadium at the weekend, the Executive Governor of Imo State, Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha said that South East states now produce the highest number of prostitutes in the country as a result of bad representation by the Igbo leaders.
According to him, every nook and cranny of the country you go to you always find young ladies of Igbo extraction selling their supposed priced body for money.
Governor Okorocha described Igbo leaders as self-serving who do not have the interest of their people at heart. He noted that due to the economic crunch that is prevalent in the zone many ladies have taken to prostitution as a profession.
The state helmsman described the people of Orlu zone as good people who have always supported him through their prayers and encouragement, enjoining them to keep it up.
Governor also took a pound of flesh from the Apex Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo State, Chief Martin Agbaso, by describing him as an acclaimed King maker who could not make himself a king.
He dismissed the claim that he was made the governor by Chief Agbaso, wondering how a man who has vied for the same position for the up two times and failed could make him a governor.
Okorocha said that APGA was dead before he joined the party, claiming that his presence revived it.
“APGA was dead and I came in and APGA won an election”, he said, adding that “he made me a governor but he could not make himself governor”.
Governor Okorocha who is the APC Governors' Forum Chairman disclosed that there were two factions of APGA in the state, the APGA-PDP and his own faction of APGA, maintaining that he joined APC for the sake of Ndi-Igbo.
He assured the Igbo nation that it is only through the APC platform that an Igbo man can become the President of Nigeria.
He flayed the Federal Government, revealing that among the five top positions in the country, none is being occupied by a person of Igbo extraction, even as he reminded the crowd at the Stadium that the only post in the military which was held by an Igboman has been confiscated from him. He promised them that Ndi-Igbo would be better with the APC.
Okorocha enjoined them to massively troop over to the APC, adding that Imo people have ran away from the PDP as going back to the PDP could be likened to going back to Egypt.
He further described the symbol of APGA as a cockerel which is only good at Christmas because people slaughter it and eat it at the yuletide period.
According to him, he could have won the election irrespective of the party he emerged from, even Labour Party.
As online media are reacting to Prophet T.B. Joshua’s statement about abortion after rape, the popular cleric has also led his influential voice to the topic of Onanism, an issue that courted serious controversy some years ago when Christ Embassy Pastor Chris Oyakhilome stated it was not a sin.
In an interactive question and answer session via his official Facebook Page, T.B. Joshua bluntly said the following, “What is Onanism?
Onanism stems from a desire to excite. Once that desire is nursed, it is as bad as fornicating. In other words, once that desire is nursed, one is in bondage to the spirit of immorality. There is no other name to call it than sin.”
Contrarily, Pastor Oyakhilome stated in a controversial video which is available on YouTube, “In itself, Onanism is not a sin against God. Now I say that for a reason! Many Christians think that is a sin against God and satan uses it in oppressing them, oppressing their minds and making them feel ineffective and inefficient in the things of God… So if you don’t like it, stop! But God has got nothing to do with it. Onanism is about you and your body and God is not offended by it.”
So, which pastor is right on this contentious issue?
The Nigerian government has expressed commitment towards a continuous supply of gas to Ghana to operate her thermal power plants.
Top officials of the West African oil giant made the commitment at crunch meetings held with Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Petroleum, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, on Tuesday March 18, 2014.
The Energy Minister, accompanied by the Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority, Mr. Kirk Koffie, went to Nigeria Monday for discussions with suppliers in a bid to boost gas supply to Ghana.
As part of the media update on the current power situation held on Friday March 14, 2014, the Ministry claimed that one of the causes for the load management exercise being carried out by the Electricity Company of Ghana was because of the erratic and very low levels of gas supply from Nigeria resulting in Ghana unable to power its thermal Power plants to full capacity.
After intense negotiations with the Minister for Petroleum of the Republic of Nigeria, Officials of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Shell and Chevron who together form N-Gas and who are the suppliers of the Natural gas to Ghana, the Ghanaian team was briefed about the causes of the low levels of gas supply and assured of a constant supply of 50MMBtu/d, up from the 30MMBtu/d or less being supplied in recent times.
The committed 50MMBtu/d falls far short of the contractual volumes of 123MMBtu/d but could immediately at least keep the Sunon Asogli Plant running,
The team also consulted with officials of the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company and the West Africa Gas Pipeline Authority and explored other potencial private gas suppliers.
The ongoing rationing of power across the country has been necessitated partly by a sharp drop in the volumes of gas received from Nigeria through the West Africa Gas Pipeline.
