Ogun State police arrest pastor who fingered member to validate her virginity
POLICE in Ogun State have arrested Pastor Adekunle Kayode of the Way Evangelistic Ministry of Abeokuta for fingering a 20 year old parishioner to validate claims that she was a virgin.
Yesterday, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Pastor Kayode, 34, was arrested after a complaint that he carried out the test on the victim at the church's premises in Olorunshogo, Abeokuta. According to the police, the victim told her father, who subsequently reported the matter to them and as a result, detectives attached to the Kemta division of the command arrested the pastor.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the public relations officer of the Ogun State Police Command, said: "Kayode was arrested at his home on Okediyi Street, Abeokuta. Another suspect, Onatade Oluwasegun, 23, of Sheriff Onatade Street, Obantoko, was also arrested for conspiring with Kayode to use the victim for ritual purposes.
“The victim, who is 20 years old, alleged that Kayode also had indulged in this ungodly act for years. She also accused Kayode of fingering her several times even while she was on her monthly periods, alleging that last Sunday, the pastor fingered her again to confirm her virginity while she was in the church for a programme."
Mr Adejobi added that Mr Oluwasegun, who is Pastor Kayode’s accomplice, allegedly used a charm on the victim with the intention of raping her, possibly for ritual purposes. He pointed out that the Ogun State police commissioner Ikemefuna Okoye, has directed that the matter be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
After a search of the church, charms were recovered, which Pastor Kayode, was said to have hidden on the premises. Of late, evangelical churches across Nigeria have been under increased scrutiny after growing incidences of clergymen abusing members of their congregations in different manners.
